The Sudden Sting of Christianity

The Sudden Sting of Christianity

Anyone heaven bound has felt it. It happens when the Holy Spirit interferes with our own ways of living which prove to be contrary to God’s. It strikes when we assume our old lies, our old use of profanity, our old custom of sleeping with anyone before marriage, our old drunkenness, our old dirty jokes, or our old habit of smoking weed are no problem. If someone claims to have met Jesus Christ but has never experienced the conviction of the Holy Spirit, then they have never met the real Jesus.

Conviction of sin is the greatest need in our churches today. Conviction of sin is the greatest problem in Washington D.C. Being a Republican or Conservative is never going to save the soul of an American. Only Jesus Christ can give eternal life (John 14:6). Our churches and national problems do not require five hundred bells and whistles with two thousand moving parts. Simply put, Jesus is the only answer that works.

A W Tozier declared, “If the Holy Spirit left the church today, 95% of church life would go on as usual.” No one would know the difference! The government and media are tweaking our culture to accomplish their diabolical goals, and in most cases, the culture is directing our churches. We must seek God with humility and repentance of sin if we have any love for God or hope for our churches and Nation.

The conviction of the Holy Spirit is that inner poke or sting from God that something must be dealt with immediately. An ungodly behavior cannot be tolerated any longer. True conviction should lead to a screaming “YES” to God from our souls that we will no longer compromise God’s Biblical standards, no matter what. Pray and allow God to interfere with your thoughts, lifestyle, actions and conversations. Conviction yells at us to, “Stop! Danger ahead! Fix this before it is too late!”

The Kneeling Christian

The Kneeling Christian

Author Albert Richardson once wrote, “A traveler in China visited a pagan temple on a great feast day. There were many worshippers of a hideous idol which was enclosed inside a sacred shrine. The visitor noticed that most of the devotees brought small pieces of paper on which prayers were written. They wrapped these prayers into mud balls and flung them at the idol. He was told if the mud balls stick to the idol, then the prayers would be answered. If the mud ball fell off, then the prayers were rejected by the god.

“We may smile at this peculiar way of testing the acceptability of a prayer, but is it not a fact that the majority of Christian men and women who pray to the Living God know very little about prevailing prayer? Yet prayer is the key that unlocks the door of God’s treasure house.

“All real growth in the spiritual life, all real temptation, all confidence and peace in the presence of difficulties and dangers, all repose of spirit in times of great disappointment or loss, all habitual communion with God , depend upon the secret of private prayer.”

Jesus told His disciples that, “Men ought always to pray and not faint” (Luke 18:1). In light of these words of Jesus, isn’t it truly beyond our most intensified and detailed comprehension that a perfectly sinless, holy God even cares to communicate with us?

The blood of Jesus Christ is so powerfully thorough when it comes to cleansing the grossest, most gruesome filth of our thoughts and actions, that it should provoke an inner demand that we communicate daily and often with Him in all things. If you placed my life under a microscope in an effort to detect the smallest of my sins, and if you searched out my most distant past using the Hubble Telescope, you wouldn’t find a trace or speck of my sins. That slays my ego.

Refusing to Remember

Refusing to Remember

He stood before the people and declared, “We have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us. We have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all of the blessings that we see in our country were produced by superior wisdom and virtue of our own.” These words are clearly true for today but believe it or not, they were spoken by President Abraham Lincoln. If his words were true in the 1860’s, they must surely be an understatement today.

Today the United States refuses to remember its own history. Our citizens are completely clueless of our national beginnings. On September 6, 1620, one hundred souls seeking Christianity without government intervention, set sail from Plymouth, England. After two months of sailing on the Atlantic, fifty remaining souls landed in the dead of winter, at what is now Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Sundays were not a casual day for sports, recreation, or shopping. In the early years, John Winthrop preached a message asserting that all people conduct themselves according to Micah 6:8, “to do justly, love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.” He said, “We will then become a city on a hill and the eyes of all the world will be upon us.” How prophetic. The Pilgrims were not perfect by any means, but they knew beyond all doubt that all blessing and provision came from the God of the Bible.

Folks, we can learn from history. The strongest fort will receive the fiercest attacks. By not maintaining a vigilant guard, the United States has squandered its strength by taking its focus off Jesus Christ, but you don’t have to.Refuse to be that person who whines about having so much to do, or saying, “I’m too tired for church.”

Refuse to neglect prayer and fellowship. Refuse to neglect your Bible time, but DO NOT refuse to remember the truth about America’s Christian roots, and our Great Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The Pure and Perfect Bride

The Pure and Perfect Bride

Is there any end to the selection of fad diets, cosmetic procedures and anti-aging products boasting an endless array of false promises? Recently Pamela Anderson said, “Anti-aging is a lie. Things change and if you can find a sense of humor in it, it’s better.” I have often believed the world’s perception of beauty to be in drastic opposition to God’s.

There is a bride whose beauty is unmatched, and the secret of her beauty is her groom. In chapter 4 of the Song of Songs the groom declares, “How beautiful you are my darling, how beautiful you are! Your eyes are like dove’s behind your veil.” This is how the King of kings, Jesus Christ, looks upon His blood washed bride which is His church. He adds that there is no blemish in her and pursues her saying, “Come with me.” There isn’t any makeup masking which she has applied, but only what He has done, that makes this bride most attractive. The sacrifice of Himself on the cross, when accepted by grace through faith, is what has made her perfectly pure, and beautiful.

The irony is, the few numbers of those who care to commune with Him in quiet places of calm and consolation. Queen Esther was petrified to appear unannounced before her husband King Ahasuerus who could order anyone’s head cut off in a heartbeat. How relieved she was when the king extended his scepter, granting her entrance to the throne room.

Just one sin remaining on me would be cause for me to be thrown from the presence of Christ, but His scepter has been extended with all love, joy and acceptance.

Solomon noted they had dove’s eyes for each other. Doves mate for life and spend practically all their time together. Christ longs for His bride to practice His presence, practically all the time. His scepter is extended as He calls us to commune. Has He honestly captured your heart?

My Greatest Need

My Greatest Need

At the dawning of this new year, I want to say thank You God, my gracious and adopting Father. You have loved me like no other. Your love is strong, pure, everlasting and knows no bounds. Your love is most characterized by mercy, grace and forgiveness. You have fulfilled my greatest need.

Your love is eternal and sacrificial. In extraordinary ways Your love remarkably surpasses all human comprehension. Open my eyes to perceive Your love’s protection and provision throughout my life. Surely You have proven the faithfulness of Your word over and over, demonstrating that You change not (Malachi 3:6). I praise You for Your consistency and daily fulfilling my greatest need.

I have been entirely inconsistent, practicing strength in prayer one day and weakness the next. You are always good and You care for me. Your love is immutable despite my inconsistencies and though I could never repay You for Your love, You have fulfilled my greatest need.

I have done nothing to deserve Your Son, yet Jesus Christ is my Savior and the King of my heart. You knew me when You created me as an embryo, knit me in my mother’s womb, and recorded all my days before there was yet one of them (Psa 139). Your innumerable thoughts of me are precious, and if You are for me, then who can ever stand against me (Rom 8:31)? Your Holy Spirit lives within me, and You have fulfilled my greatest need.

You are aware of my most shameful secrets, disgraceful deeds, all my failures and continue to love me. You know me inside and out. When I call, You hear me and accept my heart felt confession with repentance. Thank You for holding me together every day of my life despite my darkness. Your love is indescribably powerful, and I am grateful that You have fulfilled my greatest need.

You are my constant friend. Thank You in Jesus’ name for fulfilling my greatest need, to be loved by You.

We Exalt You

Misguided Motion

Misguided Motion

Revelation two describes Jesus in the midst of seven lamps, which represent the seven churches Jesus was about to address. Church congregations may be distinct with various characteristics, yet altogether one in the blended light emitted from their candles. There is variety, but true unity for those who are born again. F. B. Meyer declared, ”Jesus is in the midst of the collective life of the church while it is on the earth.”

The seven stars in Jesus right hand represent the messengers, or pastors of those individual congregations. The first letter was dictated by Jesus to John and sent to the church in Ephesus. Imagine that pastor sauntering out to the mailbox and staring with heart stopping astonishment, at a letter addressed to him from none other than Jesus Christ.

With trembling hands, he rips open the envelope and begins to read that Jesus has noted his church’s perseverance, endurance, work, and Berean-like quality of discovering false teachers. Yet despite all this, his knees are instantly weakened when he is overcome by an empty feeling of faintness as he is informed, “that you have left your first love (Rev 2:4).” You see, love is the most excellent way, and love is the most powerful motivation to serve our King. Paul declared, “The love of Christ constrains or controls me (2Cor 5:14).”

“Left” means to forsake, to lay aside, or even worse; to send forth. There is no better way to please our Savior than to express our love to Him. The prayer closet is the sacred space God invites us into where it is only you and Him. That’s the place where we become deeply aware of His matchless holiness and our feeble inclinations toward sins which lead to death.

The church in Ephesus was driven by misguided motion, rather than the guidance of the Holy Spirit. A true expression of love for our Savior delights God and moves us to serve greatly with greater passion.

Maturity Comes from Obedience

Maturity Comes from Obedience

Obedience is meant to be added to listening. Without obedience to God’s will, it is completely unrealistic to claim that you truly love Jesus. He said, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Therefore, love and obedience go together. Innumerable numbers of professing Christian’s desire God to fix broken stuff and broken lives, with no intention of obeying Him. In disobeying God, we’re telling Him to hold back blessings.

Moses wrote, “Be sure your sin will find you out” (Nu 32:23). When someone is living in disobedience, and before you even know what they’re living in, you’ll see it in their attitude first. Something is going on that just doesn’t look, sound or feel right. King Saul was commanded by God to utterly destroy all the Amalekites, including their livestock, for how they ruthlessly ambushed Israel in the wilderness. Upon Saul’s return he blamed the people for keeping some of the livestock alive, while he also spared the life of Agag their king.

Samuel the prophet immediately inquired, “What is the bleating of the sheep I hear?” Saul had willfully disobeyed God’s command. It is here we learn that, “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1Sam 15). The piercing of the dagger is felt as Samuel spoke saying, “Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has rejected you from being king.”

Oh, how we love to edit and modify God’s instructions to our liking. Far better to stop using profanity, murmuring or mocking. There may be phone numbers to block on your phone, sights to stop watching, or alcohol to avoid. God already sees the poison in your heart that is killing your promising future.

Try a slow read 1 Samuel 15 to discover how Saul became the first king to forfeit his future and anointing through disobedience, yet retained his position as an ineffective king for a season. ‘Tis much easier to face God’s commands in obedience, than to experience the inevitable consequences.

Leading and Following

Leading and Following
All at the Same Time

In 1 Chronicles 25 King David set apart Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, as well as their sons, to lead the congregation of Israel in worship. The sons were under the direction of their fathers, and their fathers were under the direction of “The Sweet Psalmist of Israel” King David, who was himself under the direction of God. Besides being trained to play instruments skillfully, the leaders prophesied as well as “giving thanks and praising” our Lord. Our translation of this term “prophesy” comes from the word “naba,” meaning inspired.

The first point is to say that nobody will ever be a good leader unless they are a good follower, and all good leaders are following Jesus Christ. These worship leaders were strongly inspired by God whose inspiration flowed through prayerful communion with Him. There is no substitute for quiet connections with God.

Secondly, they sang to the Lord. It was not a time for distracting conversations. I do not believe that what David was directing would resemble our modern “progressive” forms of American church. Progressive happened when we left candles for light bulbs. It would be wise for every congregation to periodically take inventory of their worship expressions.

Thirdly, the congregation was also “trained” in corporate worship as the leaders led. At times we may sound joyfully loud enough to break glass, or solemnly quiet. Regardless, as the clock strikes ten on Sunday mornings it would be good to pause our pre-service discussions which may distract others, and ready our hearts to give God praise, communing with His Holy Spirit.

Be assured that God loves our expressions of joy and declares, “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; He will save, He will rejoice over thee with joy; He will rest in His love, He will joy over thee with singing (Zeph 3:17).” May God always be in the spotlight as the Spirit of the living God falls afresh on you, and fills you with His love.

Growing in the Gap

Growing in the Gap

Jesus said, “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name. Ask and you will receive so that your joy may be made full” (John 16:24). It’s the clash of two different expectations regarding the gap between asking and receiving that causes our frustration, often resulting in doubt and hopeless confusion. Some answers come in five minutes producing instant joy. Other answers may not appear for five years, while still others may take fifty, causing some of us to erroneously feel forgotten or like leftovers.

Consider that it is not always about the thing we want God to give us, but instead, what He must prepare before that answer arrives. The cause of delay could very well be us, not God. He will never give us anything that we’re not ready for. We Christians desire people, positions and possessions that we may not be ready for. Consider that our Father is doing a work in us as He is conforming us to the image of His Son, Jesus.

Timing, maturity, ability, other people and experiential knowledge all have to be in order before some requests can be received, otherwise we might waste or squander God’s blessings in our immaturity. Our maturity is developed in the gap between the asking and receiving. Welcome to the Schoolhouse of Maturity so you can handle what you’re asking for when it arrives. Why should God increase our income if we haven’t yet learned to steward our money with Biblical discipline? Why would God grant a ministry to anyone who isn’t qualified just yet?

Someone said big doors swing on little hinges. Be faithful in little things, then bigger doors may open. In Acts 7 Stephen delivered the second longest sermon in the Bible. What an honor! His preparation included serving angry, older, hungry, lonely widows (Acts 6:1-6). These ladies were completely unable to pay him back. God could have said, “Be faithful serving my people and I’ll grant you an entire chapter in the Bible.”

A Biblical Four Letter Word

A Biblical Four Letter Word

If we eliminated the word “with” from the Bible we would no longer be with our heavenly Father, with the family of God, with any hope, or with eternal life. With that being said, life would be empty with no real purpose.

Christ Himself placed high priority on the word “with” in Mark 3:14 which declares, “Jesus appointed twelve that they would be with Him, and that He could send them out to preach.” The first purpose was fellowship, and the second purpose was to send them out speaking of Jesus wherever they went. I wonder how many Christians even analyze the concept that Jesus Christ has a desire for their attention, affection and conversation? Truly God doesn’t need you, but He loves being with you regardless. According to John 15:15 He’d truly love to be your BFF.

The lyrics of an old praise song by Kirk Dearman read, “One thing is needful O my Father; that I sit at Your feet and pour out my love. I sit and worship You my Father. I lift my hands to You my God.” These words reflect the choices of Mary and Martha while Jesus visited the home of their brother Lazarus. Martha, who was busy getting their house in order, was occupied FOR Jesus. Mary, sitting at Jesus feet, was occupied WITH Jesus. I get it. The trash and the cat both need to be taken out, but are you ever occupied with Jesus as you sit at His feet and pour out your love to Him?

The words that Mary heard moved her. Those words moved her to obedience and a desire to be with Jesus forever. I believe she is the lady who washed Jesus’ feet with her hair and her tears, for the forgiveness of her sinful past. I’m not saying Martha wasn’t saved. I am saying that Jesus found a true and proven follower in Mary, who washed His feet in the presence of detractors without a single care for what they thought.
