Aspects of a Blessed Life

Aspects of a Blessed Life

We live in a culture that, glorifies the gangster, makes heroes of hoods, and pities the perpetrator; although any criminal knows that what goes around comes around (Hosea 8:7). God described our time as the end time when He said, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light, and light for darkness” (Isaiah 5:20).

So, how do we live in the light when the world is so dark? A survey of Deuteronomy 26-28 reveals the aspects of the blessed life.

First: Believers gathered in unity (26:7-8).” Father Abraham (Abram) may have met God as a wandering Aramean generality, but his offspring became great, and did everything together. The activities of their journey with God are described as happening to “we, us, our, or you-all as a group.” Isolation was unacceptable.

Second: Believers sacrificed first fruits offerings (26:10) They gave offerings rejoicing for all the good God gives, and then He gave more. Peter followed Jesus after he caught two boat loads of fish, but Jesus provided every fish Peter had ever caught before and after that. Peter recognized it and gave his entire life to Christ.

Third: They ate together at the altar of sacrifice with others (27:6-7). Jesus was always inviting Himself to everyone’s house to eat and interface. When we gather and our conversation is about Him we’re doubly blessed for, “man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Luke 4:4).

Fourth: They rejoiced together (27:7). There was no option for long term isolation. God has given us the church in which we are to gather (1 Cor 1:2). A life led by the Holy Spirit allows the blessed life to overtake all the my hand could do on my own.

May God bless abundantly as you live toward His throne, not turning aside to the left or the right (28:14).

A Walk Happens

A Walk Happens

Talk is cheap; but a walk happens. When someone welcomes Christ into their life, a new manner of living materializes. A born-again person experiences new interests and different desires. New behaviors manifest as the Holy Spirit maneuvers us through a life that is now governed by God.

Jacob’s encounter with God resulted in a transformation that was obvious to anyone who knew him. Genesis 32:24-32 brings to light a spiritual truth from a physical experience. Jacob met a man of whom he would later say, “I have seen God face to face.” This man wrestled all night long with Jacob. As dawn was breaking, he dislocated the socket of Jacob’s thigh, causing a limp which Jacob would retain for the rest of his life. Jacob’s new walk through this world would be permanently identifiable.

After his encounter with God, Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. He was quite the supplanting trickster before, but now he was governed by God. Being born-again of the Spirit changes our lives forever too. Our self-led life becomes one which is then governed by God. Some who struggle in our walk might consider the following perspectives, rather than wrestling with God:

1) Since conversion brings new life, be willing to experience godly changes continuously. Like Jacob, we have been offered a Spirit led, new way of living. Original behaviors displeasing to God are intended to bite the dust.

2) George Muller once said, “The life lived for God, is a life lived with God.”

3) New life is a gift from God. What you and I do with it, is our gift to Him. Remember, we get but one shot at this life.

4) When the tree stops growing, it’s dead; so keep growing. Be sure, that when we leave our choices to God, He always gives us what’s best.

When It’s Over, Better Is Coming

When It’s Over, Better Is Coming

When I left my dead end life of living my way, I entered into eternal life with Jesus Christ, where His way has proven to be much better. I loved playing baseball. When my time playing was over, I entered into a prison ministry at the Adobe Mountain youth prison, where I could now disciple young men on a regular basis. After my ministry at Adobe Mountain was over, I became the leader of a Christian acting ministry for five and a half years, where I was able to stimulate Christians to live with increased zeal and introduce numerous lost souls to new life in Jesus Christ.

I never wanted to leave the Special Delivery Acting Ministry, but after closing the doors while we were experiencing our highest demand, it was over. The call to shepherd God’s flock in Black canyon City came through shortly thereafter. Ministry opportunities were about to expand more than ever before. When you are truly surrendered to Jesus Christ, and something you thoroughly love and enjoy is over, something better is coming.

The apostles did not want Jesus to leave but His time on earth was over. Shortly after His ascension, God the Holy Spirit was superimposed onto the one hundred twenty believers in an upper room on the day of Pentecost. They were no longer timid or afraid of anyone. God could now send them to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ around the world with Holy Spirit power, and that was much better.

When Peter’s first sermon on Pentecost was over, Peter and John met a man lame from birth who could have never climb up those stairs to the upper room. Once that glorious experience in the upper room was over, the upper room took the good news down to the general public. Peter and John came down the stairs to the man on the ground, who was then healed in Jesus’ mighty name. Something better was coming.

What Grooves Are You Digging?

What Grooves Are You Digging?

Why does John gospel (12:39) tell us that the Pharisees “could not believe” in Jesus? Believing for many of them had become impossible. According to Christian doctor Caroline Leaf, a clinical neuroscientist specializing in research of psycho-neurobiology, any habit including addictions, can be reversed in approximately 63 days. When you’re stuck in the soup of depressing, self-destructive or fearful thought patterns you can overcome those patterns based on how you decide to think. The word of God encourages us to be anxious for nothing, to think on these things instead, and to take our random thoughts captive. Our mind is what communicates with God while expressing those thoughts to our brain, which affects our overall health.

Born again people have access to the mind of Christ (1Cor 2:16). You did not have this rich and exhaustive privilege prior to your born again experience. As we rethink and rehearse lies, tragedies and losses of our past, deep grooves of habitual thought form in our brain. If you turn your outdoor water faucet on and let it run for three weeks, that repeated flow will cut grooves into your yard. The same happens with our thoughts. Dr Leaf has discovered what your thoughts actually look like (You Tube: Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess - Dr leaf).

Enough was enough for many of the religious leaders two centuries ago. Isaiah (6:10) declared that God would harden the unbelieving Pharisaical hearts after they witnessed more than a few miracles, much like when God acknowledged Pharaoh’s hardened heart and made it even harder. Sometimes conviction is clearly felt when people initially hear the gospel. It may have been uncomfortable and difficult to ignore that first invitation, but the next time it becomes easier to ignore. The grooves are forming and if ignored, they turn into deep trenches. Many Pharisees could no longer believe.

God has provided a way of healthy thinking that leads to an overcoming life. May your thoughts and faith be strong.

The War on the Floor

The War on the Floor

Emergencies, catastrophes and tragedies tend to drive us to our knees. My knees have hit the floor for intercession when loved ones are in dire straits. A war on the floor may ensue when lives hang in the balance.

In Luke 11:1, Jesus’ disciples came saying, “Teach us to pray.” In his book, “Designed for Discipleship,” J. Dwight Pentecost notes that the word “pray” comes from a word denoting, “near, or by the side of, like a sheepdog awaiting instructions from his shepherd. Likewise, we’re to remain attentive, waiting like that sheepdog at our Master’s side, alert to His instructions.

Much of the work of tending sheep was done by the sheepdog. The sheepdog didn’t chase rabbits, run ahead, or lag behind his master. He had no clue of what to do or where to go, until he got the orders from his master. The same applies to us living near and communing often with the Good Shepherd of the church, Jesus Christ (John 10:11). Prayer is what keeps our relationship with God up close and personal. It keeps us living a life that will count for eternity, instead of chasing rabbits we’ll never catch or keep anyway.

Here is where the war part comes in for our church. In Matthew 6:10 Jesus taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” That’s a declaration of war on enemy forces encroaching upon us, as well as our mission outreaches. It’s one thing to plant foreign churches, but it is also imperative that we protect them with intercessory prayer. Our Good Shepherd’s will is, that they flourish and grow strong. This should be considered our honor.

Let’s be praying as the Holy Spirit leads us for these pastors and their flocks: Pastors Jairo of Puerta de Golpe, Miguel of Alto Pino, Medardo of Choluteca, Santiago of Guinope, Eddie of Comayagua, and Ordonez of Los Castanos.

Visible Christianity

Visible Christianity

If God had His way, what would the church look like today? Would it look anything like Mark 16:20, “And they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them.” Jesus told His followers to start doing things they never dreamt of, were not comfortable with, possibly didn’t feel like doing, but simply believed He would be alongside them the entire time.

He never instructed His followers to promise prosperity, copy the culture, analyze demographics, or offer free giveaways. In 1 John the apostle wrote to correct the twisted caricature of Christianity. He points out the sort of people we were supposed to be.

The epistle of 1 John is his effort to repair that which is broken. He declared that loving was an old commandment, but today this new commandment meant we’re to love as Jesus loves. Paul wrote, “God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (Rom 5:5).” God did not give us His Holy Spirit to better love ourselves, but to better love other people including the unlovable.

God’s agape love is sacrificial, and our flesh and old nature are the burnt offering. Christians have no free pass to slander on social media, think immoral thoughts, steal or gossip. The Holy Spirit has given us the power to love sacrificially and pray for enemies.

Satan doesn’t mind us going to Bible studies or memorizing Bible verses, as long as we never put it into practice. The first thing Jesus Christ preached was repentance. The first Spirit filled message from Peter was repentance. The young rich ruler sadly walked away from Jesus because he loved his money most of all, but Zacchaeus, being a rich tax collector, repented upon meeting Jesus Christ. Behavior matters.

Visible Christianity reflects Jesus Christ when His love is activated in our lives. Love activated is the distinguishing mark of a true church where true Christianity is visibly on display.

The Odd Couple

The Odd Couple

King Solomon wrote 1,005 songs, but the “Song of Songs” is tops on the Heavenly Billboard Hot 100 forever. This Oriental love song is divided into three parts recording the courtship, the wedding, and the marriage of King Solomon to an unnamed peasant country girl from Shunem, located near the Valley of Armageddon. Many believe her to be Solomon’s first and true love, whom he married before he backslid from the precepts of God. Thus, they are the odd couple. Who would imagine King Solomon with a farm girl?

The imagery of a typical Jewish wedding unfolds in chapter 3:6-10. The groom has finally arrived without advanced notice with great pomp and a parade of people. He appears in his luxurious coach to then whisk away his beautiful bride. The groom will take the bride to his father’s house, where he has prepared a place for them to remain alone and out of sight for seven days.

In John 14:2 Jesus promised, “In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare aplace for you, I will come again and will take you to myself.” Jesus Christ is the groom and His church is His beautiful bride. The Bible informs us of a great catching away of born again believers in the twinkling of an eye (1 Cor 15, 1 Thes 4). This world will then experience incredibly great tribulation for seven years. We the bride, will have beencaught up and out of sight to remain alone with Jesus Christ, at His Father’s house in heaven.

Solomon’s marriage to a peasant girl foreshadows Christ’s marriage to us bankrupt and undeserving sinners, who have only our hearts to offer. Revelation 22:17 declares our current mission to this lost and misguided world is to proclaim, “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’"

The Lord Is by My Side

The Lord Is by My Side

Near the end of Paul’s ministry and life he was arrested in Jerusalem, where soldiers were commanded to bring him into the barracks. The following night the Lord Jesusstood by Paul and said, "Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about Me in Jerusalem, so you must testify in Rome (Acts 23:11).” In the face of people abusing, accusing, yelling and screaming, Jesus Christ stood right by Paul’s side.

As rockets rain down, buildings collapse, lives are lost, children are slaughtered, property defaced, and the misinformed keep shouting their threats; as a follower of Christ, He is with you, and the Lord is by your side. When nothing makes sense, and wisdom seems nowhere; tomorrow looks blurry, and the world is a nightmare; the Lord is by your side.

The world is filled with the kooky, the silly, the nutty and wacky, but when murderous massacres repeatedly happen, by people who claim to know God, this should cause the world to wonder, where is the real solution. If only they knew it’s not what is the answer, but who actually is. Will you be the one to convey in this crisis that Jesus will stand by their side.

He’s greater than all who oppose Him. Jesus is our Eternal King whose glory knows no bounds. He’s enduringly strong, abundantly gracious, kind and immeasurably mighty. He’s more than you can imagine. Jesus is the Son of God, the sinner’s Savior, the way the truth and the life. When we are weak, He is strong. He’s our victory over temptation, who forgives, defends, and sustains us. The Lord is by our side.

In case you forgot while you watched the fake news, He will never leave nor forsake us. He is the real deal, the One and the only, and He’s never going away. He’s invincible, unstoppable, unbeatable and this world can never remove Him. Therefore, we don’t just add Jesus Christ to our life; He is our very life.

The Good Fight

The Good Fight

Paul instructed the Corinthians saying, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses and strongholds. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.”

The battle field is often in our mind, where demonic spirits fill our thoughts with erroneous speculations, and lies that are meant to demoralize us. We should never allow the enemy to convince us by fear and doubt that we cannot do whatever God’s word says we can do. The following is a great illustration of the believer’s battle from my friend and chaplain, Tobias Abuchan of the South Sudan Liberation Army in Nimule.

“The Biblical word for fight in Hebrew is Lakham. When the Jewish people came back to the land of Israel, they had to quickly organize and an army for the first time and learn to fight. They developed into one of the most effective and powerful fighting forces in history.

You may not be a fighter in the natural realm, but in the spiritual realm you cannot be a pacifist. You have to fight. If you are a child of light you have to stand against the darkness. If you do not fight, you will lose because you are already in a fight. Your enemy attacks your faith, love, marriage, and relationship with God.

The soldier who does not realize he is in a battle is a sitting duck for the enemy. Don’t be a sitting duck! Fight back – not against people, but against the darkness. Fight the good fight of faith, love, joy, truth, righteousness and hope. Stop living on the defensive and start overcoming. Put up your spiritual fists and come out swinging. You’re on the winning side, but you can’t win if you don’t fight.”

Are you all in

The Most Important Sign

The Most Important Sign

The disciples asked Jesus, “what will be the sign of the end?” In Matthew 24 Jesus mentioned all the indications that today many people scoff at saying, “Oh there have been wars and rumors of wars, kingdoms against kingdoms, pestilence, earthquakes and famines for centuries, and Jesus hasn’t come back yet.” Note; deception is the very first sign above all these that Jesus warned us about. “Take heed that no man deceive you (Mat 24:4).” Deception is the most important sign.

With television, satellites, cell phones and the internet, when has deception ever been more rampant? Deception is the most glaring sign warning us that we are so near to the end of the church age.” The words, “take heed,” come from a Greek word, “blepo,” indicating a strong attempt to jerk someone to attention. Jesus’ initial and most urgent warning is, do not to be deceived.

Today most people are simply checked out. Many churches and pastors ignore Bible prophecy which means they have willingly scorned 27% of scripture. The grand finale of the church age is upon us and people crave psychologically based, make me feel good stories rather than desiring to know Jesus Christ, the only Savior we’ll ever get. What could be more important than getting to know Jesus Christ?

At the end of the age, we know the whole world will turn against Israel. Today Israel is surrounded by enemies. The temperature of muslim nations is boiling. We see violent pro-Palestinian protests around the world. Anti-Semitism is exploding against Israel which is only the size of New Jersey. Zechariah the prophet declared, “I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and Jerusalem (Zech 12:2).”

The news media is slanted, the economy is in the toilet, and the world is in apostacy. Therefore, be married to the word of God in these last days, and be not deceived.
